History of the Announcement
By the end of December, a TV trailer for Pokemon Black and White 2 in Japan ended with a quick announcement of a "big news" regarding the Pokemon franchise on January 8, 2013. The news was quickly picked up by Serebii and spread like wildfire across Pokemon blogs and the mainstream gaming media as a whole. It was soon found out via Twitter and the Nintendo Direct channel that this will be a global announcement and not just information for Japan-only. The said "special" Nintendo Direct would happen on January 8 at 8PM Tokyo Time and would be streamed globally across all Nintendo websites. Various rumors have appeared. One of them is a brand new Eevee because of a certain Pokemon Tweet.
On January 8, 2013, Satoru Iwata hosted the special Nintendo Direct and announced to the world Pokemon X and Y.

According to Tsunekazu Ishihara, the president of the Pokemon company, X and Y will add 51 new Pokemon, boosting the number of species to 700. Other than that, the games will utilize the abilities of the Nintendo 3DS present the game like never before. An interesting tidbit he mentioned is that the new communication system will make it feel as if you are playing with others around the world naturally.

51 new Pokemon will become available in the game. This adds up the total number of species into 700. Currently, 5 new Pokemon have been announced to the public - the 3 starter Pokemon and the 2 Legendaries.
Chespin, Froakie, and Fennekin make up the new starter Pokemon for X and Y. While their types are not yet announced, I assumed that they are Grass, Water, and Fire Types respectively. More details will be added soon. Check out the images:
Yveltal and Xerneas make up the new Legendaries representing Pokemon X and Y. Yveltal is also the mascot of Pokemon Y while Xerneus is the mascot of Pokemon X. It is highly likely that more legendary Pokemon will be part of the roster as well. For more in-depth information, check out Meet the Legendary Pokemon in X and Y
